It’s Independence Day here in the states, and the sweet sounds of fireworks are filling the air… mostly because people have been setting them off for like two weeks now in anticipation of the 4th of July. You could drown out the noise or gear up for your barbecue with a playlist full of classic rock hits (but who isn’t sick of hearing “Born in the USA” already this month?) or take a country/Americana approach (with too many tracks to name)… but I thought why not take to the streets with a mix that blends all the best hip hop, indie, and electropop with lyrics that celebrate all of our shortcomings along with our successes.
Pour another drink, get ready for the sky to light up, and kick back and listen. You can check out the tracklist here, then scroll down to listen to the whole thing on Spotify!

Some of the highlights from this playlist: Two tracks I’ve been loving lately come back to back in this mix — Halsey’s “New Americana” and “America” by Royce da 5’9″, which both paint very different pictures of the United States but both have incredible lyrics with a powerful sound. Those who are fans of Hamilton will also recognize Daveed Diggs in “Summertime,” with his rap project clipping.
