Cheese. And Beer. And Cheese.
Thursday morning, I slept in.
It was nice, and even though I woke up a little on the early side I managed to fall back asleep for a few hours. I’d forgotten what it was like to be woken up to sunlight coming in your room, back in Ocracoke I’d only had one window with a veritable blackout curtain, so having two windows with only blinds was refreshing.
I got on the road around noon to visit Nick and Jo in Wisconsin, and though the drive felt a little long, I think it was because I’d been driving for basically the past two days, so of course it was going to suck a little bit. The drive wasn’t bad though, and knowing I’ll probably be making it fairly often it was fairly easy to stomach. I missed an exit, but luckily Lis’ top notch navigational skills got me headed in the right direction.
So, Wisconsin! Just as adorably quaint and beer-filled as I remember, the first night I got here we played City of Thieves with a friend of Nick’s, which was awesome, but more on that later. Getting my Magic cards back has also given me THE BUG and despite the fact that I have no one to play with, I’m itching to pick up some new cards and do some deckbuilding, so we’ll see how that is.
I’ve spent most of the week thus far just hanging out; Friday night Nick and I went to see All’s Well That Ends Well at the American Player’s Theater, which was just awesome. Forgetting the tickets wasn’t awesome, since we had to drive like an hour and a half to get there, but luckily the nice ticket people reprinted them for us. Oops. The show was great – and seriously, Shakespeare was totally on top of the whole modern humor thing. The ten minute debacle about One’s Virginity was about one of the funniest things I’ve seen on the stage. Plus, the actors were great.
Sunday we were supposed to see Scott Pilgrim vs. the World but, because Jo is awesome (okay, it was kind of my fault too) we completely misread the show times and ended up going to see The Other Guys, which I really enjoyed. Will Farrell is still a little watered down, but the movie itself was pretty good. The only downside to this one, though, was that there were a lot of jokes that I ended up being the only one who laughed at them. Do you know how awkward it is sitting in a theater and being the only person who’s laughing? See here’s what’s really awful about that, too, is that there were some jokes about TLC. You know, not the Jon & Kate centric channel, the 90′s band that cautioned us about perusing naturally occurring rock and water formations? Yeah. And looking around at the theater-goers, I was pretty sure that Nick, Jo, and I were among the only ones old enough to actually get that joke. Oh my God. Am I old?
At any rate, this has been just the right kind of peaceful relaxation I’ve needed. Nick and I have spent a lot of time assembling tiny boats, playing video games, catching up on Archer and The Guild and Firefly, and perusing his impressive gaming library. I’m heading home on Saturday, but have a job interview on Monday I’m pretty psyched about. I don’t really want to jinx it though, so, let’s all just hope for the best?
Regular non-travel recap blogs to (hopefully) return soon. The midwest has been pretty entertaining thus far. I’ll miss my WI folks when I head back “home,” but I’m looking forward to getting settled in Michigan. :)
